When choosing an IVF clinic, cost matters—but it should never be the only consideration. The experience of the clinical team, the quality of the embryology laboratory and the ability to individualize treatment all play an important role.
For some San Diego patients, traveling to Arizona provides access to advanced IVF care while keeping the overall cost of treatment more manageable. That matters because IVF is not always a one-cycle process. Preserving financial flexibility may allow a patient to pursue another retrieval, complete genetic testing or move forward with additional embryo transfers if needed.
At New Direction Fertility Centers, our goal is not to provide a stripped-down version of IVF. It is to provide individualized treatment and advanced laboratory care without making the cost itself another barrier to building a family.
IVF should be planned as a complete journey—not just a single procedure.
A more manageable first-cycle cost can preserve options if another retrieval or transfer becomes necessary.
Why Some San Diego Patients Consider IVF in Arizona
IVF pricing can vary substantially between clinics, and advertised prices do not always include the same services. Patients may receive separate charges for monitoring, retrieval, fertilization, embryo culture, freezing, storage and embryo transfer.
Our base IVF package starts at $6,500 and includes many of the services involved in completing an IVF cycle.
Our $6,500 Base IVF Package Includes:
- Cycle monitoring performed at New Direction
- Egg retrieval
- Assisted hatching
- Embryo freezing and thawing
- One embryo transfer
- One year of embryo storage
Medications, pre-cycle testing, anesthesia, ICSI, PGT-A and outside monitoring are not included in the base package. Every patient should receive a personalized estimate based on the services expected to be part of their treatment.
For patients quoted substantially more in San Diego, the difference may help offset travel expenses while preserving funds for medications, genetic testing, another retrieval or future embryo transfers.
When comparing clinics: Look beyond the advertised retrieval price. Ask for the anticipated total cost through one embryo transfer and confirm exactly which laboratory and clinical services are included.
The IVF Laboratory Matters
Much of what determines the quality of an IVF program happens behind the laboratory doors.
Embryos are sensitive to changes in temperature, gases and air quality. Our laboratory was designed to provide a stable, carefully controlled environment throughout fertilization and embryo development.
LifeAire Air Purification
Volatile organic compounds, airborne particles and other contaminants can affect the laboratory environment. Our LifeAire system is specifically designed to filter the air used in an IVF laboratory and reduce potential contaminants.
Individual Astec Incubators
In a traditional large incubator, embryos belonging to multiple patients may share the same chamber. Opening that chamber can temporarily change its internal conditions.
At New Direction, each patient’s embryos are cultured in a dedicated Astec benchtop incubator compartment. This helps maintain a stable environment and limits unnecessary disturbance when embryos belonging to another patient are evaluated.
Our Laboratory Includes:
- LifeAire laboratory air purification
- Individual Astec benchtop incubators
- On-site embryology services
- Embryo vitrification and storage
- ICSI when clinically appropriate
- Embryo biopsy and PGT-A coordination when appropriate

Individualized Treatment, Not a Standard Formula
A sophisticated laboratory is only one part of good IVF care. The treatment plan must also fit the patient.
Your protocol is developed using factors such as your age, ovarian reserve, diagnosis, sperm parameters, previous response to fertility medications and reproductive goals. Monitoring results are reviewed throughout stimulation so medication dosing and timing can be adjusted when needed.
We also discuss whether services such as ICSI, PGT-A or embryo banking are likely to add value in your particular situation. More treatment is not automatically better treatment. Every recommendation should have a reason behind it.
Why the Total Cost Still Matters
Discussing cost does not diminish the importance of quality. It recognizes the reality that some patients need more than one step to achieve their goal.
A patient may need:
- More than one egg retrieval to create enough embryos
- Embryo banking before beginning transfers
- More than one embryo transfer
- ICSI or genetic testing based on the circumstances
- Additional treatment after an unsuccessful cycle
When the first cycle consumes the entire treatment budget, patients may be forced to stop even when another attempt remains medically reasonable. Keeping the initial cost manageable can preserve the ability to make the next decision based on medicine—not only finances.
The value of lower-cost IVF is not simply spending less. It is having more options if the journey requires another step.
Can Most Monitoring Be Completed in San Diego?
Usually, yes.
During ovarian stimulation, patients require several ultrasounds and blood tests to evaluate follicle development and hormone levels. San Diego patients may be able to complete this monitoring locally, with the results sent to the New Direction team for review.
Our physicians use those results to determine medication adjustments and the timing of the trigger injection and egg retrieval.
Although every treatment plan is different, many traveling patients make two primary trips to Arizona.
Trip 1: Egg Retrieval
Patients generally arrive before the retrieval and stay locally through the procedure. Because sedation is used, someone must accompany you and drive you afterward.
Your care team will advise you when it is appropriate to return home based on the procedure, how you are feeling and your individual medical circumstances.
Trip 2: Embryo Transfer
If you undergo a frozen embryo transfer, you will return during a later treatment cycle. The transfer itself is a brief outpatient procedure and normally does not require anesthesia.
Some patients may need additional appointments or travel depending on their treatment plan. We discuss those details before the cycle begins so you can plan as realistically as possible.
Making the Trip from San Diego
San Diego is approximately 300 miles from the Phoenix metropolitan area. Driving time varies with traffic, your destination and the time of year. Flying from San Diego to Phoenix is another option.
Our team can help traveling patients prepare for:
- Local monitoring arrangements
- The anticipated timing of each Arizona visit
- How long to remain near the clinic
- Nearby accommodations
- Possible changes in the retrieval schedule
Because the timing of an egg retrieval depends on how the ovaries respond to medication, travel plans need some flexibility. Follicles, unfortunately, do not consult your hotel reservation.
Is Traveling for IVF Right for You?
Traveling to Arizona may be worth considering if:
- You want access to an advanced IVF laboratory
- You value an individualized treatment approach
- You are comfortable completing monitoring at another office
- Your schedule allows some flexibility around retrieval
- You want to preserve financial options for additional treatment if needed
Travel may be less practical if your medical circumstances require frequent in-person evaluation by the treating clinic or if short-notice travel would be especially difficult.
A virtual consultation can help determine whether traveling is medically and practically reasonable before you make any commitment.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can my initial consultation be virtual?
Yes. San Diego and other out-of-state patients can begin with a virtual consultation to review their history, previous treatment and potential options.
Where can I complete my monitoring?
Our team can discuss available outside-monitoring options. Ultrasounds and bloodwork must be completed according to the treatment schedule, and the results need to reach us promptly.
Does a lower treatment price mean fewer services or lower-quality care?
No. Our pricing reflects how the practice was designed and operated. It does not represent a reduced version of IVF. Your clinical treatment and laboratory care are based on your individual needs.
Does the $6,500 package include medications and PGT-A?
No. Medications, pre-cycle testing, anesthesia, ICSI, PGT-A and outside monitoring are among the services that may involve additional charges. We recommend reviewing a personalized written estimate before beginning treatment.
How much will I actually save by traveling?
That depends on the local quote you are comparing, the services you require and your travel expenses. The purpose of comparing costs is not simply to find the lowest price, but to understand how much of your treatment budget will remain available if additional care is needed.
What if I have insurance coverage?
Coverage varies significantly among insurance plans. Our team can help you understand whether New Direction participates with your plan and which services may remain your responsibility.
